Position Description:

University of Iowa Health Care seeks its next Deputy Director to lead the NCI designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinical Services team. University of Iowa Health Care represents the integrated healthcare enterprise of the University of Iowa, which includes the University of Iowa Health Care Clinical Enterprise, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and University of Iowa Physicians. University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center serves as the main campus for University of Iowa Health Care and is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States and sits adjacent to the Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. University of Iowa Health Care has recently expanded to include Medical Center Downtown (formerly known as Mercy), Medical Center North Liberty (new orthopedic hospital), and other locations across the state of Iowa. The faculty and staff of University of Iowa Health Care conduct biomedical research that has led to some of the most important discoveries in the treatment for cancer, heart attack, stroke, eye disease, hearing loss, genetic diseases, birth defects, and many other conditions. Through its educational mission, University of Iowa Health Care trains the next generation of global leaders in patient care, medical research, and education.

Located within the Carver College of Medicine, one of the top public medical schools in the country, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC) has a distinguished record in research, education, and clinical care. The UI HCCC is the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, a distinction it has held since 2000. The center coordinates all cancer related research, education, and patient care by faculty and staff from 41 departments and six colleges across the university. A hallmark of the HCCC is multi-investigator collaboration among basic, clinical, and population scientists. In concert with University of Iowa Health Care, the HCCC is expanding its clinical practice to additional sites such as its Quad Cities campus in Bettendorf, IA, outreach sites, and collaboration with community oncologists and critical access hospitals to provide access to cutting edge treatments and clinical trials. In addition, UI Health Care recently forged an agreement with Mission Cancer + Blood to create a comprehensive cancer care network across the state of Iowa, which will greatly increase access to advanced cancer treatment and research across the State of Iowa.

The successful candidate for Deputy Director will be a creative leader and an accomplished administrator who understands the changing healthcare environment and is able to leverage the Center’s strengths to advance and support excellence in the delivery of clinical care and community engagement. The Deputy Director will be responsible for access, care delivery and coordination of cancer care at all UI Health sites, and cooperative efforts such as outreach and community collaboration to deliver exceptional care. This individual will foster excellent relationships across the institution and region, and will build innovative clinical programs. Stature in academic medicine in an oncology-related discipline (basic science, surgery, medical oncology, or radiation oncology), a record of effective administrative and fiscal leadership, exceptional interpersonal skills, and positive interactions with students, staff, and faculty are all important qualifications.

Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level, and to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Candidates could become a member of one or more of several departments upon appointment.
