Job Description

The Position

The Museum Curator reports to the Protector of Culture. The successful candidate will coordinate the activities of the Museum to ensure superior archiving and exhibitions of materials. The individual is responsible for working with the Protector of Culture to curate regular exhibitions that display the breadth and depth of the shishalh Nation culture and history while educating shishalh members and the public.

 

The Candidate:

Exhibitions

  • Develop proposals for quarterly exhibitions in the museum, including opening events.
  • Implement all approved proposals for exhibitions as well as exhibition openings.
  • Develop proposals for upgrades to the museum, including new storage or display cases.
  • Develop educational materials including posters, signs and brochures. 

Archiving

  • Ensure all materials are archived appropriately, including hard copies and digital records.
  • Ensure all materials are photographed.
  • Work with consultants to draft short-term and long-term management plans for the museum.
  • Implement all short and long-term plans for the museum.
  • Work with consultants to draft museum policies, such as a policy for the loaning of materials and fees for entering into the museum.
  • Implement all approved policies.

Planning 

  • Assist the Divisional Manager and Protector of Culture in implementing long-term strategic directions for the Stewardship and Territorial Land Management Division.
  • Assist in ensuring annual strategic objectives of the Culture and Recreation Departments are met.

Special Events

  • Work collaboratively with the Sechelt Arts Festival to put on the annual exhibition; and
  • Work collaboratively with staff and consultants to put on the annual Sechelt Art Crawl.
  • Work collaboratively with the shishalh Archeological Project and other approved academic projects to meet the goals of the project and the Nation. 

Operations 

  • Assist in developing and implementing a yearly calendar of cultural and community workshops, cultural programs, and events, including but not limited to:
    • Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Aboriginal Day, Canada Day, Self-Government Day, Remembrance Day, and others
    • Summer Fun Program and Camping trips within the swiya
    • Bark stripping trip, drum making, plant harvesting, and others (a minimum of 6 per year)
    • Sechelt Arts Festival, Art Crawl, and other festivals 
  • Participate in the shíshálh elder’s language program. 

Communication

  • Assist in developing bi-monthly good news stories for distribution to staff and in the newsletter.
  • Draft bi-monthly updating of the website and Facebook for approval.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, drafts policies, plans, procedures and background documentation as requested. 
  • Build relationships and liaise with shíshálh members, shíshálh artists, local museums, local festivals, and partnered academics.
  • Complete other related duties as may be required within the scope of the position.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Aboriginal studies, history, or other relevant degree or equivalent years of directly related experience, plus five years’ experience in the relevant area. A combination of related experience and qualifications may be considered.
  • Must have administrative capability and work experience, including experience managing a project or department. 
  • Must possess extensive knowledge and a historical background of the shíshálh Nation.
  • Experience working in a museum or providing tours is preferred. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team. 
  • Ability to engage the public professionally and openly.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution background.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, accurate reports. 
  • Excellent demonstrated proof of time management.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess the dynamics of the community.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, with a clean Driver’s abstract (Class 4 considered an asset) 
  • Valid Criminal Record Check, including clearance to work with vulnerable populations 
  • Must be physically able to sit, climb, kneel or crouch and be able to lift/move at least 40 pounds.
